Get into the holiday spirit with our 10th Edition of Meals for Monologues

by Cast Iron Studios Staff

Hone your skills & help your community!

It’s time to dust off that favorite monologue you’ve been clambering to perform, and blend it with your newfound, expert-level self-tape & Zoom skills! We’re excited to announce that the 10th edition of our “Meals for Monologues” open-casting-call-slash-food-drive will take place VIRTUALLY on Monday, November 23rd.

If, like many, you’re adjusting your plans this holiday season—and foregoing travel—why not carve out some time to hone your acting skills, while helping the community?

In exchange for a screenshot of your donation of $5 or more to the Oregon Food Bank, actors are invited to submit a self-taped monologue of two minutes or less–OR sign up for a limited number of Zoom appointments between 10AM – 2PM on Nov. 23rd.

Self-tape submissions must be received by Monday, November 23rd to guarantee viewing by our casting directors.

See instructions below for both self-tape submitting, as well as scheduling a Zoom appointment.

If finances are a hardship, email us, and we’ll find someone for you to “hitch a ride with”. (Interested in sponsoring someone who could “use a lift”? Please let us know!)

Spread the word!

SELF-TAPE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Self-taped monologue must be no longer than TWO MINUTES.
  • Smartphone videos are fine, but place phone or video camera on a solid surface or tripod.
  • Be sure you are framed in LANDSCAPE (horizontal) mode, in a CLOSE-UP (head and shoulders), with good LIGHTING and SOUND.
  • A neutral backdrop is recommended. Try to keep background noise to a minimum.
  • Typically, you would direct your lines to the side of camera, not directly into the lens (it helps to use a real human off-camera, if possible).
  • Upload your video to Vimeo. You will be sending us the direct link to your video on Vimeo only, not the actual file. Emails containing video attachments will be deleted.
  • You may password-protect your video, but be sure to send us the password with your submission.

IN-PERSON ZOOM APPOINTMENTS

  • From our Facebook page, click on the General Auditions tab. You’ll need to access the tab from a desktop computer, as it will not show up on mobile devices.
  • Look for and click the dropdown arrow next to the “MORE” tab, and scroll down to “GENERAL AUDITIONS”.
  • You’ll see a page with our Setmore calendar integrated. From there, you can click on “MEALS FOR MONOLOGUES”.
  • The Setmore calendar will take you directly to the audition date with available appointments. They are all 5 minute slots.
  • Once your appointment is scheduled, you’ll receive a confirmation email from Setmore.
  • Use this Setmore email to cancel or reschedule your appointment, if needed.
  • You’ll receive a separate email from us with a ZOOM LINK!

DONATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Go to the Oregon Food Bank website to make your donation ($5 or more suggested).
  • Please list “Meals for Monologues” in the Leave a comment text box on the OFB donation form.
  • Get a screenshot or PDF of your donation receipt to include with your submission.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Write us an email with your name, contact information, and HOME BASE (i.e. Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, etc.). Note: If you are a member of SAG-AFTRA, your home base is the local you are listed with.
  • You may include one headshot and resume (or a link to an online casting profile) with your submission.
  • Include the direct link (URL) to your video on Vimeo (and password, if applicable).
  • Include your proof of donation (screenshot or PDF, per the above).
  • Email your submission to talent[@]castironstudios[.]com, subject heading: M4M – your home base. For example: M4M – Seattle. (Remove brackets in the email address before sending.)
  • Deadline for self-tape submissions is Monday, November 23rd, end of day.  We cannot guarantee your video will be reviewed if received after the deadline.

HOT TIPS

  • Go for a contemporary monologue, please. We just don’t cast that much Shakespeare.
  • Comedic pieces are always appreciated. We could all use a good laugh these days!
  • We’ll also accept songs, poems, jokes—anything uplifting and fun. But if you’ve never—or rarely—auditioned for us, we suggest you prepare a contemporary monologue close to your type, so we can check out your mad skillz.
  • If you audition for us often—or if you just want to spread joy and not take things too seriously—anything uplifting is game. We love to be entertained!
  • Kids can do whatever they want. School play or musical canceled? Perform a short piece from that, if you like!
  • Don’t forget to include your proof of donation with your submission.

In the meantime, please stay safe, wash your hands and shine your creativity as bright as your holiday lights. If you have a few minutes to give back, consider helping out a fellow actor by coaching them via ZoomWeAudition, FaceTime, or your platform of choice.

It is artists who are keeping us all inspired through these challenging times. We look forward to getting to know your work, or discovering a new side of you!

Virtual Meals for Monologues rakes in record numbers

by admin

On Friday, April 3rd, 2020, Cast Iron Studios held its ninth annual “Meals for Monologues” with a coronaviral twist.

Due to social distancing requirements under COVID-19, our open-casting-call-slash-food-drive took place virtually this spring, with actors from all across the U.S. submitting self-tape videos, along with receipts for their donations to the Oregon Food Bank.

We received and reviewed over 150 submissions from Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Spokane, New York City, San Francisco, Atlanta, Montana, Colorado, Ohio, and more.

In all, our community raised enough dough (get it? ☺️) to fund around 6,015 meals for the hungry! This surpasses our previous record by over 1,330 meals. An astonishing feat, considering how many in our industry are currently out of work, and barely making ends meet themselves.

The Team at Cast Iron has been inspired not only by your generosity, but by your talent and your spirit.

If there’s one thing this pandemic has proven, it’s that artists and creative content are not just “nice to have,” but are crucial to our health and well-being. Where would we be right now without actors, musicians, filmmakers, animators, video-game creators, and artists of all disciplines?

Joy and Cameron
Joy Park and Cameron Wake were among the many actors who submitted self-tape auditions.

We salute our first responders, our medical workers, our grocery clerks, delivery drivers, and other essential workers.

And we bow deeply to all of the artists who have made this pandemic bearable, by making us laugh, keeping us entertained and inspired, and providing distraction, commentary, education, food for thought, comfort, reprieve, and hope in our darkest hours. Thank you for reminding us of all the beauty and potential of humanity.

May we come out of this pandemic stronger, more compassionate, more appreciative, and brimming with innovation, motivation, and insights.

A profound and heartfelt (virtual) hug to all who participated!

By Popular Demand: Self-Tape Option for “American Vandal” Portland Casting

by admin

Due to the overwhelming response to our recent casting call announcement for the Netflix hit series, American Vandal, Cast Iron Studios has made available a self-tape option for Pacific NW residents who were unable to snag an appointment for the auditions in Portland on January 6th.

AMERICAN VANDAL – PORTLAND SELF-TAPE OPTION

If you are a Pacific Northwest resident between the ages 14 to 22, and were unable to reserve an appointment time for Saturday’s open call, you may submit a self-tape audition through Sunday, January 14th, 2018.

Our staff is making this option available with the following caveats:

  • Talent based outside of the Pacific Northwest will not be considered. You must be able to provide a valid physical address (not a PO box) in Oregon or Washington, and/or proof of NW talent agency representation.
  • You must be legal to work in the U.S. Production will not assist with work visas for roles on this project.
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 14-22 on February 12, 2018. Not 13. Not 23. Ages 14-22 only. We mean it!
  • We cannot guarantee we’ll get a chance to watch all of the auditions by the deadline. We’ll do our best, but we’re humans, and there are only 24 hours in a day. (Hint: By keeping your audition short, you’ll be helping us view more clips, so keep it under 2-3 minutes!)
  • You will only hear from us if we are interested or need more information from you. We simply cannot respond to the volume of questions and requests for status updates. By submitting your audition, you agree not to flood us with phone calls, emails, blog comments, social media messages or carrier pigeons. Please help us have more time to watch everyone’s videos. We promise we’ll be in touch if we need you! Thank you in advance.

We recommend that interested parties watch Season One of the series, prior to submitting.

Please click on the link below to apply. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully.

OPEN CASTING CALL FOR NETFLIX SERIES

by admin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, January 2, 2018

CAST IRON STUDIOS ANNOUNCES OPEN CASTING CALL FOR NETFLIX SERIES

“American Vandal” will shoot its second season in the Rose City, and needs high-school students to fill numerous speaking roles.

PORTLAND, ORE.   Last year’s breakout hit, American Vandal, is headed to Portland to shoot its second season, and Cast Iron Studios is seeking young people, ages 14 to 22, to portray high-school students in the popular Netflix series.

The series—a co-production between Funny Or Die, CBS Television Studios, and 3 Arts Entertainment—will begin shooting in the Portland area in mid-February. Cast Iron Studios, which also handled Grimm, The Librarians, and Here and Now, is in charge of Oregon principal casting.

“There are a number of small, speaking roles that producers are hoping to hire locally,” said Casting Director Eryn Goodman. “The show truly needs all types, shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and abilities. They want to reflect a real high-school look: braces, pimples, and all.”

Goodman stated that, while acting experience is helpful, it’s not a requirement. Instead, “interested parties would do well to watch Season One, to get an idea of the tone and humor of the show.”

An open casting call will take place this Saturday, January 6, 2018 in Portland, and is by appointment only. Those interested in auditioning should follow the link below to reserve their time slot.

Cast Iron Studios is committed to diverse, inclusive casting. There is no charge to create a basic profile in the company’s database, and no fees will be charged to talent who take part in the show. For more information, visit castironstudios.com.

3 NON-PERISHABLES
GET YOU SEEN BY A CASTING DIRECTOR
** FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED — AUDITION SLOTS ARE LIMITED **

Actors from far and wide, you’re invited to come to our offices for an open general audition call, where you can be seen by a casting director in exchange for three (3) non-perishable food items benefiting the Oregon Food Bank.

  • Bring HEADSHOT & RESUME (stapled back-to-back or resume printed on back of photo).
  • Perform a short, prepared monologue (or two!) of your own choosing.
  • Choose a contemporary piece (we just don’t cast much Shakespeare).
  • Audition slots are 2 MINUTES MAX, so make the best use of your time!
  • No appointment necessary.  No phone calls.  One day only.  First come, first served. There are only so many auditions we can squeeze into the day; we appreciate your understanding if we run out of time!
  • If you’re a repped actor and a regular to our studio, we encourage you to drop off your non-perishables and leave audition slots open to the unrepped actors who may be new to us. (Repped and still want us to see what you’ve got? Try the self-tape option! Details below.)
  • Collection bins will be in our office from 11/20-12/1, for those unable to attend/donate on the day.

COOKIES ‘N COCOA

Join us at the end of the day for an assortment of cookies and a hot cocoa! We’ll provide the sweet treats, you provide the Oregon Food Bank donations and good cheer!

*No auditions will take place 12:00PM-12:30PM & 3:30PM-4:00PM to give Casting Directors a short break.

Not sure what to bring? Check out OFB’s list of Most Wanted Items and this article on How to Donate Food So It Won’t Go to Waste.

Spread the word! RSVP and share our Facebook Event.

SELF-TAPE AUDITIONS BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

Not in Portland, but still want to audition? Repped by an agent, regularly seen at our office, and helping us out by leaving audition slots open to unrepped talent who may be new to us? We will accept demo reels or self-tapes from actors who are Oregon local hires, in exchange for a screenshot of your donation to the Oregon Food Bank. Submission must be received by November 28th to guarantee viewing by our casting directors. See instructions below.

SELF-TAPE SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS FOR OUT-OF-TOWN ACTORS

  • You must be an OREGON LOCAL HIRE to submit for this general audition.
  • Self-taped monologue or professional demo reel must be no longer than TWO MINUTES.
  • If self-taping, be sure you are framed in a CLOSE-UP (head and shoulders), with good lighting and sound. Typically, you would direct your lines to the side of camera, not directly into the lens (it may help to use a real human off-camera).
  • Submission MUST be a LINK to view your video online, NOT a FILE attached to your email. Upload your video to VimeoYouTube or a similar platform and send us the direct URL only. Emails containing video attachments will be deleted.
  • You may password-protect your video, but be sure to send us the password with your submission.
  • Go to http://oregonfoodbank.org/donatenow to make your donation.
  • Please list “Meals for Monologues” in the Leave a comment text box on the donation form.
  • Please send a screenshot or PDF of your donation receipt with your submission.
  • You may include one headshot and resume (or a link to an online casting profile) with your submission.
  • Include your name, contact information, and city where you are currently based.
  • Please confirm in your email that you are a local hire.
  • Email submission to talent[at]castironstudios.com, subject heading: M4M Local Hire. (Replace [at] with @ in the email address.)
  • Deadline for self-tape submissions is November 28, 2017 at 11:59 PM PST. We cannot guarantee your video will be reviewed if received after the deadline.

Open Call for Transgender Actors

by admin

Cast Iron Studios teams with the Casting Society of America to hold open casting call for transgender actors on Sunday, October 22, 2017

Update: Barring any cancellations, all spots are currently full. Please join our mailing list, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay in the loop about future casting calls and general auditions. You are also invited to join us at our upcoming Meals for Monologues food drive and open casting call, benefiting the Oregon Food Bank on November 28th, 2017. All are welcome!

On Sunday, October 22, 2017, Cast Iron Studios, along with CSA members around the world, will be opening their offices to union and non-union transgender actors (including non-binary, gender non-conforming and genderqueer actors). Artists who are professionally trained as well as those actively pursuing professional careers as performers are welcome to attend. Artists will be given an opportunity to do a prepared scene in front of a panel of professional casting directors.

The open call will offer underrepresented actors the opportunity of auditioning in a professional environment, while introducing casting directors to undiscovered gems and a pool of talent who, with the right training, could become the next generation of diverse film and television stars.

To register, please follow this link.

Things to know:

  • As a limited number of spots are available, please only register if you have previously taken acting classes and/or have performed professionally (on stage or on camera).
  • If you are represented by a Northwest talent agent and already known to our office, we encourage you to leave these spaces open to new and unrepped actors. You are welcome to submit a self-taped audition to us instead. Please contact us via your agent to make arrangements.
  • Your scene should be 1-2 minutes long and ideally be a dialogue between two people. You can bring your own reader, or an extra set of pages and one of our staff will read with you.
  • You’re welcome to use one of our sample audition sides or choose your own. Pick a scene that best represents you and your ability.
  • If using our sample sides, please prepare only the lines of the character whose name appears at the top of the page; the off-camera reader will read all of the other characters. You may disregard character descriptions and change gender identifiers as you see fit. Be sure to bring an extra copy for the reader, if you’ve made any changes to the dialogue.
  • NOTE: Participants will be required to sign a basic release allowing CSA members to view and internally distribute scenes.
  • If you can no longer attend, please be sure to cancel your audition via the registration link, so that others are able to participate.

To register, please follow this link.

Please help us spread the word about this opportunity!

Casting Call: Persians, Mountain Bikers, Hipsters for New HBO Series

by admin

For Immediate Release
July 10, 2017

PORTLAND CASTING COMPANY SEEKING PERSIANS, MOUNTAIN BIKERS, AND HIPSTERS TO WORK AS EXTRAS ON HBO SERIES

Untitled Alan Ball HBO drama series returns to Portland July 17-21, 2017.

(PORTLAND, ORE). Cast Iron Studios announced today that it is seeking experienced mountain bikers, and people of Persian descent to work as background on Alan Ball’s new HBO drama series.

The mountain bikers should be 20s-30s, with a fit, athletic build appropriate for extreme sports, and be able to bring their own mountain bike, vehicle with bike rack, and cycling shoes to set, if cast.

“They will not be cycling during the shoot,” says Casting Director Lana Veenker. “Instead, they will be seen post-race, as if they had been cycling. The stylists may even pretty them up with a bit of mud and dirt, to make it look like they were riding.”

The Portland-based casting company is also seeking extras of Persian descent for a night shoot. “We’ll mostly be hiring men and women ages 30-50, but we’ll also need some Persian children, young adults, and seniors in the mix,” Veenker stated.

The series will shoot scenes in the Portland area July 17-21, 2017. Cast Iron Studios, which also cast “Grimm” and currently “The Librarians,” is handling the local principal and extras casting.

Asked if any other background positions are available, Veenker said that Portland hipster types are always in demand for this show. “We’re constantly combing our database for great beards and mustaches,” she noted.

The positions are non-union, and pay starts at minimum wage (8-hour guarantee, plus overtime) for general extras, to between $100-$150/day for other background positions. Background performers can also earn bumps for the use of their cars, bicycles, pets, etc. Plus, minimum wage just went up to $11.25/hour on July 1st!

Those interested in working as extras on the show can submit online via the company’s extras submission form. Deadline is Wednesday, July 19th, 2017.

NOTE: This casting call is for non-union background performers only.

Please only submit if you fit the specs above. No other background or principal (speaking) roles are available at this time.

There is no charge to be listed in the company’s database, and no fees will be charged to extras who take part in the show.

For additional information, visit castironstudios.com.

No phone calls, please.

Updated 7/10/17 at 5:02 PM to clarify that all above roles are background, not principal roles! Thanks!
